Can I upload movie release posters to Wikipedia? User332224 (talk) 14:54, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

please check COM:L, in short: you can't. @User332224 modern_primat ඞඞඞ ----TALK 15:55, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Almost certainly none newer than 1954; if they are older than that, there is a chance. But, basically, if you don't know your way around copyright law, I recommend against uploading any work that isn't either your own or has already got an explicit free license at the source. - Jmabel ! talk 18:38, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading multiple files from Flickr

[edit]

The past few days, I can't upload multiple files from Flickr using the Wizard. I can input the multiple Flickr URLs, but then it loads only a single file when I get to the description input page. Happens in multiple browsers. Anyone else seeing this error? Dclemens1971 (talk) 15:47, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question about CC2 flickr image

[edit]

I was looking for a public domain image for journalist Sam Hosseini, whose article does not currently have an image. I came across this image on Flickr 1. It's licensed under cc-by-2.0, but Hosseini appears to be facing away from the camera. Additionally, as we cannot see his face, the only evidence that it actually is Hosseini is the image description. Is this something that would be uploadable to commons as an image of Hosseini? Obviously would prefer a better image if possible, but I'm curious what the policy would be in this case. Wasianpower (talk) 01:06, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Wasianpower Per "NonCommercial" you can't upload it on Commons, more at Commons:Licensing#Well-known_licenses. As a Wikipedian, I don't think that pic would improve the article if you could.
That said, is he the guy in green at 0:27 in File:Sam Husseini Questions Saudi Prince Turki about Legitimacy of Saudi Regime.webm? If so, you can use a screenshot from that video, since it has an acceptable license. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:14, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I'm trying to find a better image of him, I don't think I would upload it even if I could but I was curious about the situation of whether we can trust flickr metadata to describe its contents. The video is in the article, I may try to grab a frame from it but even in there it's hard to see anything. Wasianpower (talk) 15:31, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

What is the deal with Whitby Abbey - Project Gutenberg eText 16785.jpg

[edit]

It is a simple static image (here) but it wants to be viewed in a media player. Which doesn't work, when linked to (in an English Wikipedia article does not show on the image, but rather just a link to the Commons page, which even if I did want to send the reader there (I don't) clicking on "Show in media viewer" just throws an error message.

But as far as I can tell the part that causes the image to not be displayed but rather the invitation to open a media views is not in the page source where I can access it. It is somehow built into the page I guess. So I can't find it and fix it.

The weird thing is, the page is used all over many different Wikipedias, but it doesn't work in them either. So the problem is not editor error in the Wikipedia so it not on our end. The last effective edit here was in 2023 so its not a recent change to the Commons page. So it doesn't seem to be on your end. But is is used in many Wikipedias and if no one has complained yet whatever is causing this must have happened very recently. So it must be a recent change to the Wiki display software. But it seems unlikely that the devs would go live with code that breaks things.

Anybody know what is going on here? Herostratus (talk) 08:32, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Herostratus: All of the things that you suggest here seem to work fine in my browser (Firefox 128.6.0esr (64-bit) under Debian 12), both when logged in and in a private window. The image appears correctly in the Wikipedia article and the Media Viewer displays it correctly (both on Wikipedia and on Commons). So what you're seeing is not universal. You might want to try making your environment more vanilla (e.g. by logging out or using an incognito or private window, alternatively using a different browser either logged-in or not) to see if that allows you to narrow down the problem. --bjh21 (talk) 13:13, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Huh. OK thanks. Odd, never had this problem before. Haven't changed anything on my end that I know of, ofc occasionally these things will go off by themselves. So then... something weird on my end personally is putting in a "show in media player" button rather than just displaying the image for just this particular image (at least, all others seem to work OK). There must be something special about this particular image. There's no setting for "mess up this one particular image File:Whitby Abbey - Project Gutenberg eText 16785.jpg" or "mess up a few images at random". It's a puzzler and no mistake. You can only upload those images of they are copyright expired, ineligible for copyright, or licenced in line with COM:L. @QueensanditsCrazy: You had indeed inserted a status tag, so the template "Remove this line and insert a license instead" should probably not have been inserted. Maybe it was a glitch of the automated system or maybe you inadvertently copied it from somewhere. Anyway, that's not important in this case. The important thing is that the template "PD-USGov" is wrong for this file. The file does not meet the conditions stated in that template. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:32, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Changing coordinates?

[edit]

I have tried to change the coordinates for File:Gateway on Elland Footpath 73-3, Stainland - geograph.org.uk - 7200103.jpg without success. Editing the structured data entry did not work (unless I have missed something). I could enter the new coordinates, but the publishing button did nothing. Adding a second set of coordinates and deleting the first one did not work. The locator tool did not work, either - what am I doing wrong?

For the record, the new coordinates should be 53°39'60"N 1°53'27"W for both camera and object location.

I should greatly appreciate a link to the correct procedure. --18:30, 18 January 2025 (UTC) Schlosser67 (talk) 18:30, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Schlosser67: That used to be a problem reported several times months ago, but not recently. I thought it had been fixed. I don't know more about it, but it's probably not just you. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:29, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Asclepias - I've tried again on a different computer with a newer browser version (Firefox 134 instead of 128), and surprisingly, it worked this time. Maybe it is a browser issue? But IIRC the old version did support the feature as well. --Schlosser67 (talk) 06:48, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Schlosser67: Have you got the location updated on Geograph? Because while I think I haven't got around to it yet, I will at some point update the Geograph Update Bot to propagate location changes to these newer GeographBot uploads, at which point it'll get fixed automatically. I appreciate that this doesn't actually answer your question. --bjh21 (talk) 21:45, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

How do I contact a community member/see if I can contact a community member

[edit]

I am a researcher looking for certain data points for work I am trying to do. A user created a diagram from data I can mostly access off of a public website, but has two sets of datapoints I cannot access due to the publication they used for the work not being accessible online. I really want these datapoints and was wondering if the creater of the graph would be able to give them to me, since I cannot access the original citation. How do I find the pages of people who wrote wiki pages or created figures for those pages and see if they can be contacted? I was told there was public pages that had that information and I don't know how to find that. Aansbro (talk) 21:38, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Aansbro You can look for the sources or uploader, under the "Summary" and "File history" sections respectively. Once you find the username of the person you wish to contact, you can go to their "talk" page, at "User talk:[their username]". If they have email enabled, you can also click the "email this user" link on their talk page. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 22:00, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Broken .png renderings of .svg file

[edit]

Display of "File:Pyrrolidonyl-β-naphthylamide.svg" (Link: File:Pyrrolidonyl-β-naphthylamide.svg ) is not working correctly (here and on en.WP).

The details page doesn't show any form of the graphic, just a broken-image icon. Using the [|"Original file" link] works (if your browser supports svg display). Clicking on an "Other resolutions" link fails with a "Unauthorized This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document you requested." message. Clicking on "Open in Media View" gives a "technical issue" (in graphic form). This was happening 10 or more hours ago too. Please fix. -- R. S. Shaw (talk) 20:53, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

This is an issue with the file server backend storing the thumbnails. It's not something that can be fixed on Commons but should probably get fixed as the week starts. Dylsss (talk) 02:16, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

José Bernardino de Portugal e Castro.jpg - Misnomer and wrong description

[edit]

File José Bernardino de Portugal e Castro.jpg actually refers to an image of Estêvão Ribeiro de Resende, brazilian marquês de Valença, and not any portuguese marquês de Valença, including José Bernardino. See https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Est%C3%AAv%C3%A3o_Ribeiro_de_Resende, and notice the brazilian Imperial Ordem do Cruzeiro on his chest in the image. Issue noticed by @Gameiro in this edit. RustyRapier (talk) 17:20, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It can be seen in the history of the page that this correction was already made in 2021 but it was undone in 2024 by Hehua. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:48, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@RustyRapier: The file is now back to its previous filename: File:Estêvão Ribeiro de Rezende.jpg. (It was written "Rezende" in the original publication by the author in 1861 [2].) -- Asclepias (talk) 15:43, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Angrense It was on your request, could you kindly see if there's anything else to be done in adjacent edits of the time? RustyRapier (talk) 15:51, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I can evaluate, the situation is correct. The portrait corresponds to the Brazilian Valença, not the Portuguese. Angrense (talk) 18:25, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Can't upload multiple files, coordinates not adding

[edit]

Hello,

In the past few days, Wikimedia has stopped auto-adding the coordinates from the files I've uploaded, and if I attempt to upload multiple files at once, it only shows me the first file I attempted to upload once I arrive at the "Describe" screen. If I attempt to submit, it then won't let me. I've tried switching browsers, but the problem persists. I imagine these two problems are related. Packer1028 (talk) 03:06, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I have the same problem since yesterday! It is IMPOSSIBLE to upload! WHAT HAPPENED!?? /Frankie Fouganthin (talk) 17:02, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I figured it out, at least on my end. For me, it's the fact that I add image titles in my Photos app (I take almost all my images on my iPhone), as "captions" so that I can remember the thing I'm depicting. The ones that have the captions when I transfer the photos to my computer are the ones that create a problem. When I remove those before transfer from my phone, I don't have the issue. It might be something similar for you, if not exactly the same. (However, this has only been an issue very recently, so something has changed on Wikimedia's end, since this didn't use to be a problem.) Packer1028 (talk) 03:17, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There is a patch incoming, but it's currently in the phase of being verified (meaning, we need to control that, by fixing this bug, we don't break something else). Unfortunately, you need to have a bit more of patience, hopefully the fix will be shipped with the next deployment, which might happen next week at this point. How to submit images to the public domain ?

[edit]

I am an artist and have a number of images which I would like to submit to the public domain. They are my intellectual property and I am the sole copyright holder. I am unclear on how to relinquish all my rights to the images and pass them into the public domain. I could use a detailed explanation of how to do so. 66.41.201.17 05:33, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

In some countries, some rights are inalienable. (For example, in France, you cannot waive the right to be acknowledged as an author; at most, you can fail to enforce it.)
The closest you can come to placing your own work universally in the public domain is to grant a {{CC-zero}} license. - Jmabel ! talk 06:54, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Aroseglinks: You are asking this on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia Commons does not have biographical articles. Can a profile picture or something like that of a social media account of a politician be uploaded to Wikipedia/Wikimedia? Another question is that a same picture File:P. Shanmugam in 2025.jpg was used in different news media, instagram, twitter and facebook at least at 19 places. But it was deleted for copyright in Wikimedia/commons. Why? How can I detect whether an image is copyrighted or not? XYZ 250706 (talk) 17:34, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@XYZ 250706 As a rule of thumb: Nearly everything is copyrigthed. But some works have a free license. Commons only allows free licenses. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook do not actually forbid free licenses, but it is save to assume that works on these platforms are in most cases not free licensed. It is easy to detect: If there is a free license attached to the work it is free licensed, otherwise it is not. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 18:31, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Jeff G.. I noticed that was the mistake, but the thing is I don't know why. Someone has uploaded a terribly colored, negative picture of my Facebook profile to the article about me: https://eo.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attila_Kasz%C3%A1s I was trying to upload a better picture of me, but I received an automatic message box, that Wikipedia is unable to determine, if the picture was made by me. @Attila Europa: the automated message you saw was from a filter that prevents new users from uploading small resolution images since they are often copyright violations. You should be able to upload the image using Special:UploadWizard. MKFI (talk) 08:02, 24 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
More specifically, the filter prevents these from being uploaded as cross-wiki uploads. If you use Special:UploadWizard, you will be doing the upload entirely within Commons, and the filter won't apply. - Jmabel ! talk 04:26, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Sarim Wani See COM:ARCHIVE. On en-WP, I usually use the method described at Help:Archiving (plain and simple), but I'm not sure that works on Commons. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:19, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

A way to find images with missing captions in a particular language

[edit]

Greetings to all ! I'm a new contributor at Commons.

Are there a way to find automatically images with no caption for a particular language ?
Let's say I want to find images with no caption in English or French. Is this possible to do it automatically ? Anatole-berthe (talk) 08:03, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Anatole-berthe: descriptions or captions? {{Information}} template descriptions (in the "Summary" section) can be searched by looking for the presence or absence of language templates with en:WP:Petscan or similar. I am not certain how to search for structured data captions, possibly with en:WP:Quarry. MKFI (talk) 10:00, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
My interests are about "descriptions" and "captions".
Thanks for the documentation that helped me to understand the difference between the two.

I will analyse your suggestion about "Petscan" and "Quarry". Anatole-berthe (talk) 02:28, 26 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Anatole-berthe: here is a practical example using Petscan: description search. It looks at Category:Ships and one level of subcategories for files which have German description but are missing both English and French descriptions. In the query options this is done using "Templates & Links" check for the presence of {{De}} language template and missing {{En}} and {{Fr}} templates. Please note that this does not work if the description text does not use any language templates at all which is fairly common for old images.
You did not mention if you want to create missing captions or if you are looking for statistics. Petscan works on category level and wont be able to handle millions of files but will find you enough images to work on. Quarry is probably better for large scale statistics. Descriptions are the old way of using wikitext on file description page with quite a lot of variation; structured data captions are newer method and are much more rigidly defined, but many files do not have them at all. Removing Japanese surname

[edit]

I just created Category:Atari (surname) in the higher-level category Category:Hebrew-language surnames. Three of the categories belong there, being Israeli vocalists with Hebrew names - but one Japanese is still there by default (from before the category was created): Category:Kousuke Atari. There is no existing category for a Japanese-language surname Atari into which to move Category:Kousuke Atari. What to do? -- Deborahjay (talk) 11:30, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Deborahjay: Why would you not want to put it in Category:Japanese-language surnames?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:28, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what specific rules may exist for such name categories, but apparently the name categories are included in all the applicable language categories. For example, "Category:Simon (surname)". So, if the surname Atari exists as a Japanese surname, the solution seems to be to include "Category:Atari (surname)" in "Category:Japanese-language surnames". -- Asclepias (talk) 13:48, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your guidance, Jeff and Asclepias. I've added Category:Atari (surname) to the Category:Japanese-language surnames. It seems peculiar that a name sourced in foreign languages with non-latin alphabets are romanized here, but Wikimedia Commons is conducted that way. I'm still trying to straighten out the instances in Wikidata but no doubt will understand better as responses to my help query there come in. Cheers, -- Deborahjay (talk) 14:16, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question regarding VRT

[edit]

Hello!

I've recently uploaded 25 photos of people in the Chinese Shamate subculture with the permission of the author, Alex Huanfa Cheng. He was truly a delight, responding to my inquiry in minutes and being very cooperative.

However, after I had uploaded the files, I noticed something in the {{PP}} template:

  • Please make sure the file includes a license at the time of upload; this template is not a substitute for a license.
  • If [...] the file is missing a license, this file may be deleted because it is missing valid licensing information.

I did not add the license tags at the time of upload, but rather after I had uploaded them and noticed my error. Will this be a problem? Can the files still be approved? QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 15:57, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Additional question: Can I use the files in articles before they are approved? QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 16:23, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Technically the files can be displayed, but it's probably better to wait until the VRT procedure is finalized. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:41, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's ok if you added the PP template after the upload. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:41, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
However, please do not display lots of other files in each description page. Instead, please include the files in a category. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:50, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Asclepias: OK, understood! QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 18:14, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Permission to use photos-figures for publication

[edit]

Dear Madam, dear Sir, I hope this email finds you well and that all is going smoothly for you and your loved ones.

We are currently preparing an article for a Special Issue of the Geoheritage journal, which is part of a series stemming from the RIV3P8 conference we organized at our university last year. For more information, please visit https://sites.google.com/view/riv3p8.

To illustrate our paper, we would like to include photos/images of the reptile-like bird Archaeopteryx and the fossilized skeleton of a female ichthyosaur giving birth to youngs, providing evidence of ovoviviparity (eggs hatching internally as an adaptation to a fully marine lifestyle). Both fossils were discovered in Jurassic sediments in Germany. We find their inclusion is highly relevant to the topic of our article.

Would you kindly consider providing us with these images and granting permission to use them in our publication? Additionally, if possible, could you provide the correct citation reference so we can properly credit them in our bibliography?

Thank you very much in advance for your time and consideration. Should you grant us permission, we will ensure that the images are properly attributed in the article.

We remain at your attention for further information or if you wish to discuss specific conditions regarding the use of these images. We look forward to your positive response.

Best regards, Abdelmajid

@RIV3P8 Thank you for your request. I believe this line at the foot of this (and every) page here meets your needs:

Categorization of memorials by their parts

[edit]

Some memorials feature large-size objects, such as anchors, as their major parts (e. g., USS Chicago Anchor Memorial or Falklands War Merchant Navy memorial), but quote often those parts are only visible in a minority of photographs in the memorial category. Would it be appropriate to place the latter, as opposed to individual photos, in relevant subcategories of Memorial anchors by country and other anchor-related categories? 5.178.188.143 12:48, 26 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It's a trade-off. How prominent is the feature, how likely is it that we will have photos that don't show that feature, etc. If even 20% are likely not to show the feature, I'd probably push it down to the individual photos, not the category. And if we are dealing with something that has hundreds of images, a subcat specific to the feature might be appropriate, like how Category:Rudulph Evans's statue of Thomas Jefferson is an indirect subcat of Category:Jefferson Memorial. - Jmabel ! talk 18:33, 26 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

My next question just to clarify. With commons am I able to have a separate username that is named after the that company I work for? I know Wikipedia doesn’t allow for company names to be displayed on username. But I’m wondering does that also apply to commons? Originally I uploaded the company’s photos directly to commons from my personal account and the license I used was that I was allowed by the owner to share photo. Because of this license commons deleted my photo because they thought I was infringing copyrighted material even though I was authorized to use the photo. So therefore I created a work username for commons for the purposes of uploading the photos to claim full ownership license. Is this something allowed where my username for commons is different than Wikipedia? Or do I keep uploading photos under one account and with change license to full ownership of photos? I just don’t want my photos to be deleted from commons because of this. AimeeOHNI (talk) 18:55, 26 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Please, see Commons:Username policy. Ruslik (talk) 19:59, 26 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@AimeeOHNI: If the copyright is owned by the company, though, your account name is irrelevant. What we need is for some representative of the company (possibly you, since it sounds like you have the relevant authorization) to go through the process described at COM:VRT.
Please don't re-upload the same files. Go through the COM:VRT process to get the deletions reversed. - Jmabel ! talk 00:24, 27 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading images from geograph.org.uk

@Murgatroyd49: Your link is to the gridsquare page, which covers 112 photos. Do you mean this one, 2720134? If so, it's already on Commons as File:Oxted War Memorial - geograph.org.uk - 2720134.jpg. But if it were one of the few Geograph images not yet on Commons, the best way to import it is to follow the "Licensing" link under the photo to the reuse page, scroll to the bottom and use the "directly upload this image to Wikimedia Commons" link. That fills in all the essential bits of Special:Upload for you, ready for you to choose "Upload file". --bjh21 (talk) 10:36, 27 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
